The Warm Home Discount began in 2011 and is an annual credit that the biggest energy suppliers place on the electricity account of eligible customers. The value of the credit for the year 2018/19 has been set at £140 inclusive of VAT, which means, if you qualify, you will essentially get £133-worth of free electricity.
Successful applicants are considered to be in one of two groups – either the ‘Core Group’ or the ‘Broader Group’. Places in the Broader Group are limited and are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. Those in the Broader Group need to re-apply each year. Each energy company sets its own eligibility criteria and they may change from year to year.
This page on the UK Government website will tell you about eligibility. This page lists the energy suppliers that provide Warm Home Discount. Please note, some smaller suppliers do not take part in this scheme, something to take into account when switching suppliers. Recently, a scheme for those living in park homes was piloted. An expression of interest form is available here.
